Red Oak Overview

Red Oak is one of North America’s most recognized hardwoods, valued for its warm color, open grain, and dependable strength. Its versatility makes it a staple for furniture, cabinetry, architectural millwork, and flooring — wherever timeless beauty and durability are required.

At Bennett Hardwoods, every Red Oak board is kiln-dried to a precise 6–8% moisture content for dimensional stability and consistent machining performance. Our NHLA-certified graders ensure each shipment meets strict quality standards — from color uniformity to surface finish — making it ideal for both domestic and export use.

FAQ - Red Oak

What’s the difference between Red Oak and White Oak?

Red Oak has open pores, a warm pinkish-red tone and a bolder grain pattern, which makes it a staple for interior cabinetry, flooring and millwork. White Oak has closed pores, and a golden-brown to olive tone. For most customers the choice comes down to grain and color.

Is Red Oak suitable for exterior applications?

No, we don't recommend it. Red Oak's open pores wick moisture, and it has low natural decay resistance. For exterior applications, specify kiln-dried White Oak heartwood instead.

.

Does Red Oak take stain evenly?

Yes. Red Oak's open grain absorbs stain readily and predictably, which is why it's a favorite for stained flooring and cabinetry. Use a grain filler first if you want a glass-smooth finish.
